Seattle, WA — March 8, 2010 — Amelia Reeber, acclaimed dance artist and winner of the Joyce Theater and On the Boards’ A.W.A.R.D. Show! 2009, unveils this is a forgery—a new, full-length solo performance with original music by Sam Mickens of The Dead Science and video by Joe Moore. Blending dance, theater and projected images, this is a forgery delivers Reeber’s layered abstractions on life in delightfully concrete terms.

A Seattle-based choreographer/performer with an international touring presence, Amelia Reeber is known for wry, intelligent dance that inspires both reflection and laughter. Her recent solo, Dreamlife, won over audiences at the Joyce Theater and On the Boards’ A.W.A.R.D. Show! 2009 and earned Reeber a $10,000 cash prize. The award gave Reeber the opportunity to expand this is a forgery, which was workshopped last June as part of On the Boards’ Northwest New Works Festival, into an evening-length work.

A multi-media look at how our lives unfold in the flux of what we seek, what we receive and how we respond, this is a forgery is the latest from one of Seattle’s most powerful choreographic voices—one that blends virtuosity with a knack for exploring personal discovery onstage in a manner that is genuine, entertaining and often hysterically funny.

About Amelia Reeber:
Amelia is a solo performing artist and choreographer living in Seattle, Washington. She has created many small-scale works and improvisations that reflect her interests in time, the narrative of the body, and relationships with space, landscape, and imagination.

Amelia has performed in four works by seminal American choreographer Deborah Hay: Music, Beauty, Mountain, and If I Sing To You, which was commissioned by the William Forsythe Company and toured internationally during 2008-09. Reeber’s solo, Peak and Draft, was presented with Mountain in the Northwest Artist Series at On the Boards and, while traveling in Cambodia, Amelia had the opportunity to perform that work for the Khmer Arts Ensemble.

Amelia has collaborated with and performed for a range of artists. She was a founding member of Foot In Mouth, a choreographer/composer collaboration whose work was presented as part of On The Boards’ Northwest Artist Series at in 2005. Also in 2005, she performed in Pat Graney Company’s touring production of The Vivian Girls.

Amelia is a 2009 City Artist grant recipient (City of Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs) and is Velocity Dance Center’s 2010 Choreographer in Residence. She will be creating a new work for 10 dancers as part of Velocity’s Strictly Seattle Summer Dance Intensive in July 2010. She has received support for her work from 4Culture, smART ventures, Artist Trust and more. She was 2006 Artist Trust Fellowship recipient in choreography. In December 2009, Amelia won the Joyce Theater’s A.W.A.R.D. Show! 2009 at On the Boards.

“As a choreographer she pulls audiences to the edge of uncertainty before leading them into areas of self-discovery.  As a dancer she combines finely honed technical skills with unique twists that can be ironic and comic, yet are always wryly intelligent.“

About the A.W.A.R.D. Show!
The A.W.A.R.D. Show! (Artists With Audiences Responding to Dance) was created in 2006 by choreographer Neta Pulvermacher/The Neta Dance Company and producer Marisa König Beatty in response to a need for a lab-like space in which working dance artists can engage in an open dialogue with the audience about the work presented. The A.W.A.R.D. Show! is administered and produced by The Joyce Theater Foundation.

Following three successful years of The A.W.A.R.D. Show! in New York City at Joyce SoHo, The Joyce Theater invited national peers, including On the Boards (OtB), to host versions of the dance competition in their respective regions. Twelve artists from the Northwest were selected by a national panel to present 15-minute performances at OtB and compete for a $10,000 prize. Audiences voted on their favorite act each evening. Along with two other finalists, Amelia then competed for the grand prize, which was determined by the audience along with an independent panel of dance experts.
